An excerpt from the Calliope Brass recital at Opera America, spring 2023: Personality Test Mvt.5 Reggie Rhombus by Zoe Cutler

The ideal location for performing this EPIC piece about trains by Kevin McKee: The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. Museum staff and visitors really enjoyed the performance and Kevin was kind enough to come to talk with the audience about the piece. We are all now big fans of the RR Museum of PA and Kevin McKee!

I’m used to teaching, I’m used to being onstage, but teaching to the camera and working with a puppet was brand new, and SO MUCH FUN! This is Lesson 1: How do brass instruments work? from our five part Meet the Brass Family series. Before Calliope performs our What’s Your Story? show for students they watch these videos to get to know us and Calliope the puppet. It’s a great way to get students engaged and excited about our visit and allows us to focus more of our live show on storytelling.

🌈🦄🌈Did you love The Last Unicorn when you were a kid? Jen Hinkle, bass trombonist of Calliope Brass, was a big fan! You can enjoy her fan art tribute in the Calliope Brass version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow AKA The Last Bottle of Hand Sanitizer.

This rendition of Harlem Airshaft is a selection from the King Street Big Band Tribute to Duke Ellington at the Millersville University Ware Center. KSBB has been in residence at the Ware Center since 2016 when we collaborated with the Lancaster Historical Society on a show called “Salute to Pearl Harbor” honoring the 75th anniversary of the events at Pearl Harbor. Since then KSBB has presented an eclectic variety of repertoire, commissioning new works for Big Band and performing with singer-songwriter Nenad Bach. KSBB is also dedicated to performing the greats and has presented tribute concerts honoring Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Frank Sinatra.
